Phil's paintings express his emotional response to landscape and the human figure. While organic shapes capture movement and excitement in his pictures, sensual curves encourage calm contemplation. Translucent layers of smoothly blended colour reveal underlying forms and flows which are obscured in real life, giving a slightly surreal, dreamlike quality to his work. This leads the viewer far beyond a purely representational reading of the subject to reveal a deeper essence.

Although Phil's early creative practice started with painting, he spent many years working with photography. He made a career change to give increased freedom to his creativity which has resulted in a return to acrylic painting and the development of his semi-abstract style.

Phil is the founder of the Art for Art's Sake (Bristol) painters’ collective.
